DHW Announces Dates of Nine Field Office Closures

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare has finalized the closing dates of nine field offices being closed to help meet an operating and personnel budget shortfall. The offices will close to the public at 5 p.m. on the following days:

  • May 11: Bellevue and Rupert
  • May 13: American Falls, Bonners Ferry, Soda Springs, Emmett, and McCall
  • May 25: Orofino and Jerome

Sixty-six of the 81 employees at the closing offices will be transferred to remaining offices shortly after the closure dates. Twenty-one positions in the field offices are being eliminated as part of the office closures and an additional 105 positions are being eliminated at Health and Welfare offices statewide. May 18 is the last day of work for those laid off.

To Access DHW Assistance Services:
·   Go to a DHW office; 20 will remain open. For a list of the office locations visit www.healthandwelfare.idaho.gov
·     Call the 2-1-1Idaho CareLine.
·     Visit www.welfareassistance.dhw.idaho.gov for information about public assistance programs.

Closing nine out of 29 field offices and eliminating 126 positions statewide will save $7 million. The reductions must be finalized in May in order to be in place when the fiscal year begins July 1.

Final office closure dates were affected by staffing and lease arrangements, with offices being kept open as long as possible.

Signs have been placed in the closing offices notifying customers of their options. Most people visit DHW offices for public assistance services. People can apply for assistance at any of the remaining 20 Health and Welfare office and continue accessing assistance applications through the DHW website, or by calling the Idaho CareLine at 2-1-1.
