Trapped Sober Conference:
For 3 days Bonneville County teens participate in a number of activities that stimulate team building and dialogue about underage drinking in the community and what actions can be taken to prevent it. Alisha Passey is the Bonneville Youth Development Council Coordinator. A Town Hall meeting is held with the youth and the public concerning this experience. It is a "should not miss kind of meeting." Kids meet from Thursday November 10th through Saturday, November 12th. In the evening of Saturday, November 12th the town hall meeting will be held with the kids who participated in the conference, their parents and interested citizens. I'll post the place and time as soon as I have it. These kids are awesome and I encourage our community to come out and support them!
Connecting the Dots - BYDC has launched a new parent education program called “Connecting the Dots.” Youth seem to be one step ahead of parents and adults when it comes to hiding and concealing alcohol and drug abuse. Typically a youth has been abusing alcohol or drugs 1 to 2 years before a parent suspects there is a problem. This program is designed to help parents and community members see small indications or “dots” that could lead to alcohol and drug abuse.
Prevention is key! Parents are the number one factor when kids are deciding to use alcohol or drugs. Talk to your kids often about your disapproval of using alcohol and drugs while they are underage; educate yourself of the risks associated with alcohol and drug abuse; Don’t think, “It’s Not My Child”—Every parent should assume their child is as susceptible as any other child; Set clear rules and consequences; and be a positive role model. For more information go to our website at www.bydc4youth.com or call to schedule a presentation.
